The Dog’s Favorite Spots in Washington, DC: Meridian Hill Park

June 26, 2015 By Heather

There are a lot of reasons I love living in DC, but one of the biggest is all of the parks, monuments, and green spaces.

While they are best enjoyed on days where there aren’t flocks of visitors (like cool winter mornings and rainy spring days), there are a few places that are not quite as well known. Meridian Hill Park is one of those places. In fact, we chose where we live in large part because we loved the park.

And, yes, because the dog loves the park. Where the dog loves played an important part in home buying decisions. No, I’m not kidding. Those big brown eyes can get whatever they want.

Meridian Hill Park is truly one of the prettiest parks in DC, for two reasons: it’s beautiful flowering plants and it’s towering fountain.

Wayward diatribe….

It really, really bothers me when a local of a place won’t tell you local places to enjoy because it’s “for the locals.” I think that is selfish and silly. Most visitors don’t venture much off the beaten path because there is SO much to see in DC, and they just don’t have time (or in some cases, the interest). So it’s not as if these places are at risk of becoming overrun with visitors. Plus, seriously? Like you OWN the right to know about a place? Pshawww.

Soapbox aside, Meridian Hill Park never falls to impress and entertain the pup (and us), particularly when the flowers are blooming and the fountain gets turned on. Sometimes there are even resident ducklings. It’s also a great place in the snow, with perfect snow lined branches (and sometimes a few too many screaming/sledding children, much to the dog’s chagrin). It is a great place to picnic, or hang out with friends on a lazy Sunday. With the dog, of course.

Sometimes being a dog in a city can be rough. Hot pavement, noisy cars, not enough grass…fortunately in DC, it really seems as if there are plenty of dog-friendly spaces, as long as fellow dog owners pick up after their dogs, of course! Meridian Hill Park is a favorite of ours, since it’s close, has plenty of sniffing territory, and offers fun ledges to peer (or vulture…like a vulture) over.

What are your dog’s favorite spots in your city?
