Weekly Roundup: Good for the Smithsonian & Happy Pi Day!

March 14, 2015 By Heather

Today, of course, was 3.14.15…a day that will not occur again until….we are all dead. So we celebrated pi by eating lots of pie.  Apparently pies were sold out all around Washington DC. I actually made a pie–mango and raspberry, one of my favorites! It’s spring-like because, well, it’s spring in Washington DC which means lots of rain. Based on how warm it is, the cherry blossoms might make an earlier than expected appearance.

We finally got tickets to Kenya (as alluded to in this post), which is very exciting! Our final deposit was also due for our trip, which fortunately was also offset by a tax refund. We also got tickets to Jamaica, for DH’s brother’s birthday. Phew, though I suppose lots of fun credit card bills which means lots of points for later!

Liberia is now down to zero Ebola cases, which is very exciting! I’ve sort of started looking at going to Liberia (dream or reality? who knows) but it’s an absolutely fascinating place. I hope this is a great opportunity for the country–and I hope travelers will return to the country.

On a totally unrelated note, I’m so completely and utterly thrilled that the Smithsonian has decided to ban selfie-sticks. I totally get sometimes you want to take a selfie, but I totally don’t understand being vain enough to have to have a selfie-stick to take the perfect selfie where your head is perfectly centered on whatever monument/painting/statue/whatever. Yet another reason I really am not a fan of social media (Facebook free since 2010!), because I seriously hate the constant barrage of selfies, particularly those that are perfectly staged and focus on the person rather than on the destination/site.  I am really starting to despise the stereotypes about millenials because I see such a huge difference between millenials born in the 80’s to those born in the 90’s and I am totally repulsed by many of the stereotypes which come with being a millenial. Anyway.  If you want some lovely DC humor, check out the comments on the article I linked. Gives you some good insight into DC…

On a blog note, I may be back to twice a week posting for a bit as I took on some freelancing work related to my job. I’m excited, though, to have some extra money to spend for more travel! I mean…why not?  This blog is a hobby and paid work always come first, of course.

Have a great week!
